THE SHIVA EYE
Turbanshells (lat. Turbinidae) are herbivorous. They live in up to depths of 20 meters in the sea and feed from algae which grow on corals and stones In its living time the snail bears a protective door, which is called "Operculum"(lat.) or "Shiva-Eye" and protects the animal`s life by pulling the door ,with muscle power, in front of its opening. After two years the snail loose the door to built a new stone. So the Shiva Eye lies on the seabed. Especially in south Thailand the Shiva Eyes are of best quality, intensive colours and therefore perfect to manufacture them into excellent jewellery.

The mineral and its healing effect
The stone is a specially crystalized form of aragonite. In the same way as pearls, this is a calcium carbonate with the hardness rate of 4 to 4.5. Aragonite stimulates sensibility, is effective on your general well being in a calming way and lowers nervousness and tiredness. Because of its high amounts of calcium, the stone has as well a positive effect on aching muscles, joints, tissues and skin.

The legend and meaning
As a special piece of jewellery the Shiva Eye has a unique charisma, as a protective and lucky stone it symbolizes the "Third Eye of Shiva" and watches over the one who bears it. The Third Eye represents the eye of knowledge and wisdom, the centre of omniscence of the god of fertility, Shiva, who unites male and female. The spiral on the backside of the Shiva Eye symbolizes development and motion and is a strong and important symbol for protection against bad energies. It bundles and strengthens positive energies. The Shiva Eye has a universally positive effect on your natural well being.

The colouring and the quality of colours
The colour pigments of  different algae determine the colouring and quality of the aragonite stone. All shades from yellow, brown, red, orange, green to turquoise-blue, which is very rare and difficult to find, can be found. Mostly Shiva Eyes which are lying on the beach are full of cracks and little holes and useless for manufacturing. Therefore we have to dive up to depths of 20m for the most beautiful pieces without diving gear. Structure and rarity of colouring are decisive for high quality grades. Only Shiva Eyes which are brought up from the depths of 20 meters  have a special emerald and turquoise-blue colouring. Such stones have a unique rarity.

The manufacturing
The stone, which is for the present very dull and plain can only be hewed with protracted, precise handwork and special diamond instruments. Up to twenty different worksteps are necessary. In six steps we grind the stone by hand with high-grade sandpaper until the feather structure on the frontside appears and the stone gets round and smooth. After that we smooth the edge, making carefully in two steps a groove around the edge, then later the setting has the best stability. These steps are all made with high-grade dentist instruments. Before the Shiva Eye gets its setting, we polish the stone in several steps with finest diamond paste until the quality and intensity of colouring shows its advantage.

We set the lucky stones in 925-sterling silver. Made into chains, bracelets, earrings, piercings, bellychains, pendents and many other different jewellery, the Shiva Eye appears in the most beautiful way.
